Polo has been played in the Eastern Free State since the late 19th century. It is a way of life for the local farming community. There are nine polo clubs in the Free State, of which six are within a 100 km radius of Franshoek Mountain Lodge. Two of these, Uitgedacht Farm and Franshoek Farm, are close neighbours of Franshoek Mountain Lodge (less than 10 km away) and both are polo schools as well as polo clubs. They offer polo coaching for a wide range of capabilities, from beginners to advanced players who wish to improve their game.
